Ysgol Y Deri offers a range of qualifications to pupils to suit their ability and interests across both Key Stage 4 and 5. We currently have pupils studying Agored Essential Skills for Work and Life, BCS Entry Level Certificate in Digital Skills, BCS ITQ Award Level 1 and 2, Edexcel Level 1 Maths Award, OCR Life and Living Skills, WJEC Entry Pathways and GCSE’s. In addition to the qualifications, we offer at Ysgol Y Deri pupils can integrate at St Cyres and Cardiff and Vale College where they can study Vocational, GCSE and GCE qualifications.
In addition to these qualifications the school ensures that there are elements of choice in the curriculum so that pupils can take some control in what they learn, these pupils are able to choose a subject to study on our ‘Rotation Day’ on a Friday. The subjects offered on these days vary from How to Operate a Radio Station, Forest Schools, Hair & Beauty, Animation, Media, Pet Care, Catering and Hospitality, Art, Design and Technology, Vehicle and Bike Maintenance, Computer Programming, Photography, Music, and Sport. We also make use of the sensory and therapy rooms to provide appropriate curriculum access for pupils who require greater sensory stimulation.
The school’s state of the art industrial kitchen has been an excellent tool for pupils to experience and learn how to use the equipment they would encounter in an industrial kitchen. These pupils study GCSE Catering and Level 1/2 Food Safety and Hygiene qualifications and have the opportunity to practise the skills they have learned in the schools café.
