What do we do?
Ysgol Y Deri’s Intervention Program runs out of the Launch Pad room and works in conjunction with the Behaviour Support Team, class teachers, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists to provide our pupils with the skills needed to re-engage with their education. We take pupils out of the classroom for short sessions or day long experiences and focus them on a range of exciting activities specially chosen by our Interventions Panel and designed to build confidence and self-esteem.
We assess pupils’ wellbeing and engagement in an activity each lesson using the Leuven Scale, developed at the Research Centre for Experimental Education at Leuven University in Belgium. Occupational Therapy objectives such as increasing core stability are assessed using Goal Attainment Scaling, developed by Thomas Kieresuk and Robert Sherman. All long term objectives are measurable so we can assess how effective our teaching is and the impact its having on our pupils’ learning.
The Ysgol Y Deri Interventions panel meets at the beginning of each half term to assess the progress pupils have been making, prioritise new referrals and select which intervention is right for each pupil. It is comprised of a member of the Interventions Team, a member of the Behaviour Support Team and a member of the Occupational Therapy Team. The panel aims to find the right intervention for each pupil’s needs and ability.
Our pupils can surf and stand up paddle board, make films and animations, take photographs and make music, play in one of our bands and broadcast on our radio and TV stations. We have a fine-art studio and ceramics room, a woodwork room, vegetable garden and purpose-built Forest School area. We specialise in pupil lead activities and each session is tailor-made to the pupil it is for. Our pupils learn maths through animation, develop their gross motor skills while surfing, fine motor skills and self-evaluation through construction and team building while making computer games. Physical activity is promoted through the indoor and outdoor gyms, where individual programs are created jointly with OT. All our activities are designed to challenge and push our learners to enable them to reach beyond their perceived potential.
